Frequently asked questions

Am I eligible for a tax rebate?

You might be, if you have used your own money for things that you must buy / pay for your job and you have paid tax during the year. Typical examples are if you have:

  • Paid for union fees / professional subscriptions which relate to your job

  • Used your own vehicle for work and your employer paid you less than 45 pence per mile

  • Repaired / replaced small tools that you need for your job

  • Cleaned, repaired or replaced specialist clothing (for example, a uniform or safety boots) or

  • Incurred other costs which were wholly exclusively and necessary for your job

Why would I be due a tax rebate?

You will be entitled to a tax refund where you have paid more tax than you were required to pay. This may be due to an incorrect tax code being applied but may also be due to you not claiming allowable work-related expenses that you are entitled to.

Unless you tell HMRC about these expenses, they will not know you are entitled to them. This is where we can provide support!

Use our calculator to see how much you may be due if you do make a claim.

How much can I expect to receive?

This is dependent on the:

  • rate of tax that you pay

  • the amount of eligible job expenses that you’re seeking a tax rebate for and

  • the number of tax years that you can go back to (maximum is four tax years!). Use our calculator for a quick estimate

How long will it take to receive my refund?

Typically, HMRC will issue you the refund between 6 and 12 weeks. HMRC will issue the refund to us, and we will then immediately pay the refund to you via cheque or bank transfer. The sooner we receive your claim and signed forms, the sooner you will receive your tax rebate!

How much do you charge to help me with my rebate?

In our experience, our pricing model is competitive:

  • Our fees are 20% of your total tax rebate. In the event you’re not entitled to a tax rebate, there is no charge!

What am I able to claim for?

Great question… Typically if you have:

  • Paid for certain union fees / professional subscriptions and these were not reimbursed by your employer

  • Used your own vehicle for work and your employer paid you less than 45 pence per business mile

  • Repaired / replaced small tools that you need for your job

  • Cleaned, repaired, cleaned or replaced specialist clothing (for example, a uniform or safety boots)

  • Incurred other costs which were wholly exclusively and necessary for your job

The actual amount is dependent on the value of each of the above. To support the claim, you may therefore need to know the amount you have spent.  If you’re still unsure, just Contact us.

How far back can I claim?

You may claim up to 4 tax years…. So, as each tax year passes that you don’t claim, you lose the opportunity to get your tax back. Hurry before you lose another year!

Do I need to use TRT Accountancy, can I do it myself?
